You have three opportunities to enroll in or change your health and insurance coverage: when you’re newly hired, experience a qualified event during the Fiscal Year and during Annual Enrollment each year.
Outside of these opportunities, you cannot enroll or make changes to your health and insurance coverage during the Fiscal Year.
Note: This process does not apply to programs that are available throughout the year.
You must enroll in or waive coverage within 30 calendar days of your hire date. If you don’t, you will have default coverage and will miss out on saving tax-free money with Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts and the opportunity to enroll in supplemental life insurance up to the Guarantee Issue amount without providing Evidence of Insurability (also known as proof of good health).
Visit the New Hires section for more information.
For full-time employees:
For part-time employees:
Supplemental employees must enroll to get coverage. View the Benefits Eligibility document to see the programs you are eligible for.
Note: If you are hired May through June, you will need to enroll for the benefits you’ll have for the remainder of the current Fiscal Year (through June 30) and also the benefits you’ll have for the new Fiscal Year (beginning July 1).
Did you know?
If you miss the deadline to enroll or choose not to enroll as a new hire, you will NOT be able to change your elections until the next Annual Enrollment period for benefits that take effect in July, unless you have a qualified event (see below).
A qualified event is a change that affects your or an eligible dependent’s benefits eligibility. When you experience a qualified event, you’re allowed to make certain changes to your current benefits. Any change must be consistent with the event. For example, if you get married, you may add your spouse and any eligible stepchildren to your medical plan or cancel your medical coverage to join your spouse’s medical plan. Note: You may need to show necessary documentation when adding a dependent (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.)
Visit the Moments That Matter section for information on qualified events and the changes you can make to your benefits.
You have 30 days from the date of the event to make any allowed changes. If you do not take action during this time, your coverage will continue as is and you may make changes during the next Annual Enrollment period for benefits that take effect in July.
Each year you have the opportunity to review your current coverage and make changes for the upcoming Fiscal Year, which begins July 1. You’ll receive information each year leading up to enrollment on any changes to your benefits and tips on how to make informed decisions. You’ll also receive information on which benefits will carry over from one Fiscal Year to the next and which require action to continue into the new Fiscal Year.
